Tuned In: Album Reviews

Rodrigo Y Gabriela – Live in France
Releasing live albums is a funny old business. They can work, as The Doors and The Who have showed, but many bands/singers fall short as the energy created within the venue fails to relay to CD. But Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s new album Live in France, brought out to coincide with their European tour, avoids falling into this wretched ditch. The sound of their adoring fans is the first thing you hear on the first track ‘Hanuman’before Gabriela and his Mexican counterpart, Rodrigo, kamikaze their way into their trademark frenetic guitar thrashing mayhem. You immediately get a huge sense that everyone is extremely excited to be there and a big show is about to begin. Rodrigo Y Gabriela are an extremely popular band to watch live with their almost divine mastering of the guitar – and you certainly get a reminder of this when you listen on audio, served up with the constant backdrop of the effervescent cheer from the French crowd. The duo display poignant moments of calm, in tracks such as Chac Mool and Rodrigo Solo and, of course, sudden, soaring changes in pace. Live albums aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but every so often an album captures you, draws you in to the point where you feel like you could be sitting in the front seat, this is definitely one of them.
