GORGEOUS, handmade knitwear never goes out of style, and there’s nothing quite like snuggling up in a warm and wooly sweater when the temps drop outside. One of our favourite new discoveries Monkstone Knitwear is an emerging brand located on Trevayne, a coastal farm in Wales. Designer Anna Felton is dedicated to not only creating stunning sweaters and accessories, but she’s also committed to sustainable practices when it comes to the sheep, the farm itself and making sure the design and production process are as eco-friendly as possible.
The majority of the items she sells on the site are made to order and take six to eight weeks to be produced, which seems like a long time to wait, but the attention and care taken to everything from tending the sheep all the way to the packaging (every order is packaged with a lavender bag and a handwritten letter) makes it easy to understand why eight weeks actually isn’t that long to wait for something you can treasure forever.
So how did a family of farmers decide to have a go at making luxury knitwear? “We wanted to grow the flock and to use everything we had to offer. It is a perfect platform, and knitwear is a passion of mine,” says Felton.
And if you don’t believe her, just check out the farm’s blog where you can get to know the flock of Black Welsh Mountain sheep (they also have Coloured and Natural Dorsets) as well as the other animals that live happily at Trevayne. “We want people to see the whole story. I want people to feel like they can pop in and have a cup of tea and see the farm and beach,” she says.
Don’t expect Lady Gaga to be shopping at Monkstone anytime soon; the brand focuses on classic luxury with an eye on the trends, but Felton is always more concerned with creating a really good piece of knitwear. Right now Monkstone is creating just two collections a year, but with a growing home range and flocks of new fans we’re hoping it won’t be long before the brand expands and we’ll be cosy from head to toe in Welsh wool.
