Jeepers Peepers

Our latest crush, Capital sunglasses, has some serious specs-appeal

Jeepers Peepers

THE American brand Jeepers Peepers has taken timeless shapes and rendered them in a new material: wood. Using sustainably sourced American cherry trees (no rainforests, thank you very much) each pair is handcrafted and therefore unique to the wearer. Attention grabbing without being showy, Capital sunglasses are a thing of offbeat beauty.

The guys behind Capital are a shady bunch. In keeping with the subtle cool exuded by the label, the three founders – friends turned colleagues – don’t want to divulge their names. The magic still happens in the original workshop they set up in. “We want to make sunglasses for people who have a good sense of style and are looking for something different than what the mega-sunglasses companies such as Ray-Ban or Persol offer”, one mystery designer says. “There are plenty of sunglasses companies out there, and even quite a few using wood these days. So many do a great job, but we didn’t see any representing the culture and style we like. We wanted to make wooden glasses that were based on vintage designs, but still manage to stand out in the 2010s without sacrificing class. We put an incredible amount of effort into the design of our frames, repeatedly making changes of a millimeter or less for months on end – basically never being satisfied with anything other than the pair of glasses you just can't live without.”

Cherry wood comes in three tones: Auburn, a sophisticated chocolaty hue straight out of a gentleman’s study; Natural, all beach-perfect and sandy looking; and Ebony, stripped down, matte, elegant.

He continues, “If we have an idea for a frame we want to make, we can have a prototype of it in just a few days. Seeing your ideas come to life like that can be very exciting.” When Capital started the friends were just three guys in a garage. Word has spread and despite being one step closer to world domination, they still do everything from physically making the glasses, to shooting their photos to running the website. ‘Exciting’ is definitely the word.

I road-tested them on a day out at Hampstead Heath. Comfy, non-pinching hinges? Tick. Top quality Carl Zeiss lenses to protect from the glare? Tick. 1,001 compliments against the backdrop of samey sunnies? Oh yes. After a brush with a small child on a scooter I’m happy to report that they even float.

Capital’s labor of love is your ticket to summer cool; and the good news is that all models are unisex. If you’re wondering what to wear with them, think simplicity. Less is more, as these beauties speak for themselves. Guys, think fresh tTshirts in classic block colours or marl. Girls, find your favorite cropped skinnies, tuck in your summer vest and make like Bardot, only updated and in London, not Cannes. Yes, this brand may channel faded Americana, but its offerings will not look out of place amid the stylish hubbub of our city, poolside, or on any European beach for that matter. Stockists are yet to wash up on our shores so you’ll have to order from the US website, but it will be worth the wait. Plus it’s fun to receive a package, right? As affordable as they are covetable, prices average $90 (around £55).

About time. I was getting so bored of seeing the same old wayfarers on every Mike, Brad and Drew.
