Catherine May takes a peek inside one of London’s most luxurious vintage shops

THERE’S a new vintage shop on Carnaby Street and it’s already earned itself a solid reputation as one the city’s finest.

Peekaboo Vintage, co-owned by Emily Bothwell and Michael Caunter, opened its doors on Ganton Street this spring. This seems a natural expansion from the company’s popular online store and Topshop Oxford Circus concession.

Having been sourcing vintage fashion for more than 22 years, Emily Bothwell knows the trade very well and is competent at sourcing the likes of Ossie Clark and Biba.

“Many people think they can open and run a vintage shop, but sourcing large quantity of quality vintage can take many years” says Bothwell. She certainly has the authority to be saying this; her contacts list must be one of the best in the industry.

Her greatest find? “That’d be my Ossie Clark wedding dress that I bought in 1991 for £40”. Referring to the dress affably as ‘him’, she tells of wearing him at least once a year since then.

And as for her favourite decade to source from? That’s the 1970s. Speaking fondly of Ossie Clark once more she says she loves the elegant hippy era combined with Studio 54’s decadent evening looks.

A standalone store has been something the founders have always wanted, but as Bothwell puts it, “To find enough amazing vintage pieces is no easy task”.  The brand is very in tune with the Topshop customers and is holding back the couture and designer pieces for their own store. Stocked in Oxford Circus for eleven years, Bothwell says the future looks equally promising with a new higher price range set to launch in Topshop in August.

Twenty years after the company began, the team is confident they can maintain a quality stock for all of their sales points and Carnaby Street is a fitting location for their latest venture.

“We felt Carnaby Street is full of history and Soho has such an array of cool independent boutiques that it felt like an obvious area for our brand”.

It’s difficult to argue with that sentiment and with a whole host of celebrity supporters (Billie Piper has just modeled a campaign for them) it seems a perfect time to be opening shop.

Talking about the city’s other vintage shops, Bothwell is quick to state why Peekaboo is so exceptional. “We’ve been in this business a very long time, and we know our trade very well”. Sure, a solid history helps but it is the brand’s attention to detail that really separates them. The garments that are sourced are consistently very wearable and on trend.

So what’s next for this vintage stalwart? More work with Billie Piper it seems. “I would love to work with her again”, says Bothwell, “[We’re] possibly looking to launch our own line of new vintage.”

It’d be hard to wish them anything but the best of luck with their future. Not that they need it, Peekaboo Vintage looks like it’s here for the long haul.
