Local designers pony up for eco issues and fashion lovers get free swag in the process

We Love Hackney

TO promote the Love Hackney, Shop Local campaign, which aims to boost the popularity of both the market and the borough's independent traders, Hackney Council has enlisted four of its top local designers to each design a limited edition tote bag.

Once known for its notorious ‘Murder Miles’, Hackney has now become home to an art and fashion avant-garde of photographers, designers and students, a community that has left its mark on the local markets of Broadway and Hoxton, transforming them into weekend hotspots.

Hackney Council hopes that sales of the limited edition designer tote bags  will help financially support the borough's creative residents and simultaneously fulfill the cravings of its visitors.

The designers behind the totes – all based in Hackney – are Mark Fast, usually known for his Canadian knitwear, up-and-coming designer Simone Rocha, sculptural shoe designer Atalanta Weller and menswear extraordinaire, William Richard Green. Fast and Green’s designs are launched on 28 January at Broadway Market, and will tour through Chatsworth Market on 29 January, Ridley Road Market on 2 February and Hoxton Market on the day after.

The totes designed by Atalanta Weller and Simone Rocha will be available from September – where and when remains to be confirmed.

The limited edition Market Fashion Bags – there are only 500 of each design – are available for free to market visitors – after collecting ten tokens (one token for each £1 spent) from participating market traders.

Prepare yourselves, it’s going to be a good, old treasure hunt.
