Blog We Love: The Man Repeller

Name of blog: The Man Repeller

About the blogger: Leandra Medine, a 22-year-old from upper east side New York found herself in a predicament.  After going on dates with three different men she seemingly adhered to each one, yet none of them would take that ever so daunting step to become her boyfriend.

When Leandra presented the problem to a friend, the response she got was unexpected yet almost an epiphany. It came in the form of, “maybe it’s because you dress funny, boys don’t want to take you around”.

The ultimatum was upon her; the fashion she loved or a relationship. Unquestionably for Leandra, she was not to sacrifice her style, and so, The Man Repeller was born.

Her stance? “Good fashion is about pleasing women, not men, so as it happens, the trends that we love, men hate. And that is fantastic.”

What is it about?  Explained on her blog is the definition of a ‘man repeller’ - ‘Outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls, shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewellery that resembles violent weaponry and clogs’.

Leandra’s writing, though, is not about repelling men, it’s about style. She says, “Being a man repeller becomes a process of elimination. If a guy is only really into your outfit and won't date you because of what you're wearing, they are too driven by the female exterior and don't care about your intellect."

Through her blog she delivers a refreshing look at fashion and a gentle take on female empowerment.

Why do we love it? The Man Repeller brings an increasingly disregarded aspect of fashion back to the scene; the fun of dressing up and doing it for you. Gone is the uncomfortable dress code of ‘dress to impress’; welcome home expressive elegance and self-satisfaction.
