Dans Le Noir: 95 – 92

Foundation is a multi-faceted basement in the heart of Covent Garden. As you descend from the diminutive entrance, you are greeted by a vast space. They have managed to bring the quirky design features of many Shoreditch bars to the West End. The bar area is split into lots of different areas, all with their own identity, including a magical garden with its own tree to sit around. They also have a boutique club, if you fancy dancing off the superb cocktails and to complete the triumvirate you can also enjoy fine food in the restaurant area. It has everything you need in one venue and all three parts have been given the same immaculate attention. Next time you’re stuck where to go for after work drinks or weekend dancing in central London, definitely head straight to Foundation.

Happiness Forgets

I’m sorry, but yes, it’s another basement bar…but on a whole different scale. The stairs can be found under Yelo Thai restaurant from the street and you are greeted by a long, narrow and candle-lit bar. Although only five steps from the busy Hoxton Square, you feel like you have been transported into a snug and special place, away from the world above. The ambience is eclectic with a mish-mash of retro comfy chairs and pillow-laden benches. The walls are a red-painted exposed brick with some great little art pieces hanging from them and a cracking soundtrack to match (’60s when I was in there). The lights are low, the furnishings are cool and the drinks hit the spot. I would say it is perfect for pre-drinks or if you want a chilled night out in Shoreditch (great place to take a date).

Barrio Central

Barrio Central
Barrio Central in the heart of Soho, promotes itself as a bar, cantina and club. This Latin American flavoured venue is indeed all of the above. The furniture is bright and shabby chic, the mojitos are constantly flowing and the music is shake-your-hips fun. The upstairs bar is small and narrow, but gets busy every day of the week, especially with the amazing happy hour on until 8pm. So book a table or plan to get there early. Downstairs is a small bar-cum-club that again mixes popular music and Latin flavours. Relax in the tiki hut areas, prop up the bar or get on your dancing shoes in this ever-popular Soho drinking den. Perfect for after work drinks or weekend boutique clubbing.
