AFTER huge speculation and demand on Twitter, last Tuesday 20 September saw the Scotch Egg Challenge come to life. A large crowd of journalists, bloggers, publicists and the plain old egg fanatics, turned up to The Ship in Wandsworth to show their appreciation for the snack and to see The Devonshire Arms, Chiswick crowned the winner of the ultimate Scotch egg.
Entrants came from all over the city’s top pubs including Heston Blumenthal’s Hinds Head, as well as the renowned Bull and Last in Highgate and The Thatchers Arms in Essex. Judged by an acclaimed panel, with the likes of Masterchef winner Mat Follas and some of London’s top food bloggers, there was tough competition and a lot of scrutiny, yet it was The Devonshire Arms that reigned supreme on taste, smell and texture.
The Scotch egg has been an essential item on The Devonshire Arms’ bar menu for a long time and was prepared by the head chef David Philpot who gives little information away involving his winning recipe. The pub in Chiswick claims to be a ‘community oriented pub with the intention of serving great drink and fresh, seasonal British food in an informal atmosphere’. Beating Scotch eggs that varied in a wide range of ingredients including, kangaroo, truffle oil injected egg yolks and black pudding pané. Perhaps the next Scotch egg challenge will have entrants using even more exotic recipes to take the crown of ‘King of the Scotch Eggs’?
