High-Class Hang-Outs

Our pick of the best places to take your new dress out for a drink

Published on September 19th 2011.

High-Class Hang-Outs

Cirque du Soir
The extravagant members' only club, hosts ever-changing circus acts which include acrobatics, snake charmers and magicians. Likely to leave a huge dent in your wallet, Cirque du Soir is not cheap, however you certainly get what you pay for, including the extremely attractive bar staff. There are certain nights were the non-members (better known as ‘us mere mortals’), are given the chance to experience the human tree and human disco ball. Located on New Burlington Street in Mayfair, Cirque du Soir is more an outrageous experience than just simply a bar.

Wyld-W-Hotel-London Wyld at the W Hotel
Got a spare £1,000 to hire a table? Then the Wlyd Bar at the W hotel is the bar for you. The extremely fashionable It bar, will most probably be heaving with designers and their muses during fashion week. With its incredibly plush furnishings and promotional video starring the models David Gandy and Helena Christensen, the bar still holds on to its reputation of being pretentiously beautiful. Only the A-listers mingle within the wonderful décor of Wyld, with delicious cocktails at around £40 a go, the C-listers are left out on the street – 10 Wardour Street to be precise.

Oxo Bar

Oxo Tower bar
With one of the best views of London, the Oxo Tower bar has earned a well-deserved place on any list of extravagant bars. Customers are able to sip on wonderful cocktails, whilst peering over the Thames and a fantastic view of St Paul’s Cathedral, relaxing in a very modern, almost cruise ship-like design scheme. The elegant bar is situated on the Oxo Tower at Harvey Nichols and hosts a wide range of cocktails and drinks; however, the trendy, blue lights could be seen as gloomy as opposed to romantic. At least the mellow lighting will not show you up when sitting next to one of the beautiful, Italian models shipped over for the week.

Beach Blanket Babylon
Oozing with excessive style and boho chic, the Beach Blanket Babylon (or BBB, as referred to by the regular well-heeled socialites), never ceases to amaze. With eclectic and baroque charm, BBB is definitely an upper class affair. The incredibly expensive bar is never without large collection of rich bankers, wallets brimming and a leggy twenty-something stuck to the hip. However, the lavish and sensational décor is a must-see experience. Book a booth to ensure you will be able to get into one of the most prestigious bars in London and enjoy your surroundings with a glass of Crystal.

The Garden Room High Res 2

The Garden Room at The Lanesborough Hotel
Situated on Hyde Park corner, The Garden room at The Lanesborough boasts to be the ‘first and most luxurious smoking venue in Knightsbridge’.  Whether you smoke or not, the atmosphere of the bar is very inviting. With open fireplaces, cashmere blankets and beautiful foliage, The Garden Room won the best new hotel bar award in the Imbibe hotel bar awards 2009. Hidden at the back of the hotel, it is a bit of a mission to find, although the almost secretive bar gives even the Average Joe a feeling of illicit seclusion from the outside world. The bar gives of a sufficient regal vibe, with the cosy atmosphere much like an old men’s club.

Supperclub_London_Bar_Westbourne_09 Supperclub
A completely different bar experience, the Supperclub, originating from Amsterdam, provides outrageous and racy ‘human art installations’ as part of its entertainment. The Supperclub, located in the west of London is a very popular destination for young creative types who wish to lie down on beds rather than chairs. Emitting a futuristic, sexy and minimalistic ambiance, the bar is not a place for deep conversations, but rather a place to drink, flirt and dance.  Supperclub’s philosophy is ‘Don’t come to the Supperclub if you are scared of new experiences,’ ultimately a correct statement as Supperclub is not for the easily offended.

Photo004 Lounge Lover
The attractive and unusual Lounge Lover bar has already taken the London fashion scene by storm, with a string of awards, including The Evening Standard’s ‘Bar of the Year’. The Lounge Lover bar drips character and confidence, with eclectic ornate seating and breath-taking richness. The bar emits a somewhat manic atmosphere but makes up for it by being ridiculously trendy.  Full of your usual media and fashion types, this edgy bar is definitely a must visit over the next few weeks, undoubtedly the place to be in Shoreditch, during fashion week. Why not try the bar’s own creation Loungelover cocktail, a tantalising combination of Loungelover fig liqueur, sweet vanilla and zesty lemon oil finished with Loungelover Champagne?

Juju-Int015-162448_L JuJu
This year’s Best Bar London 2011 JuJu, has to be on this list for extravagant bars in London. The bar claims to serve the finest cocktails mixed by London’s best bartender. Co-owned by actress Leslie Ash and situated on King’s Road in Chelsea, the suave and stylish bar is extremely popular hangout for socialites of a weekend. The rooms are very dark, imaginably to give a seductive feel, whilst the gold lights, mirrored ceilings and black interior are to give that glamorous feel. Not the most expensive on the list, but still pricey and a great place to spot the odd celeb. JuJu is the place to see and be seen.

Artesian Artesian
A popular celebrity hangout, Artesian is an extremely glamorous and stylish bar. The cocktails are outlandishly expensive, yet prepared to be treated like a princess and receive delicious concoctions. The characteristically British design is as decadent as it is costly and seems to attract the slightly more affluent amongst us, however, don’t be put off by the refined atmosphere. The beautifully decorated bar staff are polite and are very obliging in finding you the perfect extravagant cocktail; just remember to help yourself to as many bar snacks as possible, if only to get your money’s worth. You can find the Artesian at the five star Langham hotel, near Oxford Circus. Don’t forget to sample from the ‘World’s Best Cocktail Menu.

Savoy-Thames-Foyer_471399S American Bar at the Savoy
Recently refurbished, the renowned Savoy hotel is home to the well-established American Bar. Just like when booking a room at the hotel, be prepared to spend a horrendous amount of money on just a few drinks. With its own published cocktail book, the American bar is not a place to pop into, as the guest lists and queues are pretty awful. Once you are able to break into the bar, expectedly, you are surrounded by opulent service, décor and atmosphere. The bar is furnished like a '20s American bar, in keeping with its name, accompanied by legendary bartenders on the other side. This vibrant jazz bar is located in the west end of London.
