Travelling to Heathrow may be about to get easier (finally)

Written by . Published on November 11th 2011.

JOURNEYS to Heathrow airport from south London may be about to become a whole lot easier with Wandsworth Council’s plans for an Airtrack-Lite scheme. If approved, the service would provide four trains an hour from London Waterloo to Terminal 5 through Wandsworth, Clapham Junction and Putney.

Currently, the Paddington to Heathrow Airport and Piccadilly Line service is the only connection to one of Europe’s busiest airports and the plans would cut out a large chunk of travelling time for people who reside south of the river.

For the project to work, a new platform would have to be built, as well as a track extension from Staines to Terminal 5.

Having already invested £1bn on Heathrow Express, the airport operator has been looking for a viable link to the south and an original plan was scrapped due to a lack of funding and failed talks with the Highways Agency and local residents.

With this new scheme the initial problem of putting extra trains through Mortlake and Egham is avoided.

Leader of Wandsworth Council Ravi Govindia said,“It’s time Heathrow was put at the centre of a genuine local rail network which offered easy access to communities on all sides of the airport. It’s the only way to get more traffic off the roads.”

Talks are now underway between Wandsworth Council and Transport for London with an outcome expected shortly. This comes after the council outlined plans in their Wandsworth Travel choices Campaign to bring more green and sustainable transport initiatives to the borough such as pay-as-you-go bike hire and car clubs.

This could end up being the biggest breakthrough to date.
