Bright Lights, Big City

LONDON, where you can guarantee something is happening somewhere, all of the time. Keeping up-to-date with all these happenings can be difficult for any Londoner though. The transport, the food, the nightlife, the events… So to help maximize your time and discover new places before the hipsters do, here’s a list of useful apps.

TubeMap: Free
Our personal favourite for travel. This app gives you live information about every underground line, helps you find the quickest route from one destination to another, gives you exact departure times, helps you find the nearest station and allows you to check how much you have on your oyster card. What more does any London commuter need against the perilous underground?

London Cycle Map: Free
If you can’t stand public transport and are too environmentally conscious to drive (not that you can get anywhere in a car in London anyway), this app is ideal for you. Designed for the Barclays bike hire scheme, this app will let you know where you can find and drop off your Boris bike.  The app also provides you with ‘cycle safe’ directions and a rental timer and alarm to inform you how long you have left to return the bike and how much you will be charged for your trip.

Quirky London: £1.49
Living in London, it’s easy to get complacent and visit the same places over and over again. But if you’re sick of the usual overcrowded bars and restaurants and their ever inflating prices, this app gives you an alternative. Written by experienced travel writer and Editor Helen Ochyra, the guide uncovers all of London’s best kept secrets. Art galleries, museums, pubs, bars, restaurants and venues are listed for you, complete with maps, images and all the information you need for your visit.

Urbanspoon: Free
Chinese, Indian, Thai or Italian? With so much delicious variety in London it can be hard to decide where to eat. With the Urbanspoon app, just enter whatever you fancy, how much you want to spend and err, shake your iPhone. The app instantly comes up with a list of places in your area matching the criteria. You can also search and browse restaurants, see a list of local eateries and read reviews and ratings from newspapers, bloggers and fellow eaters.

Free WiFi Finder: Free
Internet fiends looking to get their fix of free Wi-Fi for when you’re out and about in the city need this app. The handy app displays a list of hundreds of venues around London that provide free internet. You can scan for Wi-Fi hotspots around you and automatically connect, or get details and directions to the venue.

Movies by Flixster with Rotten Tomatoes: Free
The ultimate film and cinema lover app. Movies by Flixster allows you to view all the latest box office trailers and get critics reviews and ratings from Rotten Tomato. You can search the map for the nearest cinema near you, with a list of all the films showing and book your tickets online to beat the queues.

Vouchercloud: Free
Who doesn’t love a great deal? This great money-saving app has a big selection of discount vouchers for just about anything you can think of.  You can save on everything, from up to 50 percent off in top restaurants, special deals in bars two for one deals on cinemas, gyms and days out, as well as discounts on high street clothing stores. Browse through the collection the app has to offer, and then download the voucher straight to your phone to be used immediately, or stored for later on.
