"THE fact that this market begins on ‘Electric Avenue’ makes it cool from the offset. And obviously because of that you’re going to walk round it with Eddy Grant in your head.
The next thing that hits you is the energy. It’s loud, colourful, hugely atmospheric (with smoke from the barbecues and the sound of steel drums) and feels very ‘real’ down here compared to a lot of the other markets I’ve been to. Of course, the influences from the Caribbean and West Africa are apparent on every corner, but alongside them you also have little independent bakeries and cafés moving in – and inevitably pushing up rent prices – a sticking point for many locals.
Franco Manca does great sourdough pizza, but for me it has to be about the jerk chicken outside of the Brixton Village covered area. With a carton of Rubicon or can of Red Stripe in your hand it almost feels like carnival." – Kate Berry, photographer
