Crossrail is Underway

Buckle down London, it's going to be a long and arduous road

Crossrail is Underway

IT may seem like a distant prospect right now, but by the end of 2018 London will have itself a brand spanking new Crossrail line straight through the heart of central London.

The 118km line will link Maidenhead and Heathrow Airport in the west with Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. 21km of this will be the direct work of eight enormous Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), each costing £10 million and weighing 1,000 tonnes.

The £14.8m scheme is currently Europe's largest construction project and the training of 3,500 future employees is under way at the newly formed Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy in east London.

Chris Dulake, Crossrail's chief engineer says, “Crossrail tunnelling will get underway in March 2012 when the first of eight tunnel boring machines will begin burrowing below the streets of London. Work is continuing across the Crossrail route to prepare for construction of the major new rail tunnels.”

It is hoped that the service will bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of London as well as increasing London's rail based network by ten per cent. Construction of stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Whitechapel and Liverpool Street is already underway too.

There will be five portals where the German manufactured TBMs will begin the boring process and the Royal Oak portal is already complete. The other portals will be located at Pudding Mill Lane near Stratford, Victoria Dock and North Woolwich in the Royal Docks and Plumstead near Woolwich.
