Dear Boris

Cabbies and sat navs, it's not the way it's supposed to be

Published on December 21st 2011.

Dear Boris

WAVE down your taxi policy, Boris, before it is too late. I wanted to have a word, please Boris. About these taxis. Private hire jobs. What has happened to black cabs?

Used to be you had to do the Knowledge. It took eighteen months revving around on a scooter getting to know the streets and all that. And then when you got it, you could buy a share of a licensed cab – you know the ones, the black ones with ‘For Hire’ on them. It was a good system.

Boris, honest mate, young lads and a few girls too who were not too bright but usually pretty chatty could earn themselves a decent living. Get them out of the house and all that. It was a good idea, really.

So how come we have all these people carriers going around town with sat navs, not knowing their one way systems from their dead end streets? They do not seem to have the Knowledge, nor the proper cabs neither. How come, Boris? What is the big idea? How come we had a nice old London tradition and we have thrown it away?

And what is the point of doing the Knowledge if any old Tom, Dick and Harry can get HP on a foreign made motor and tout for business without knowing the different between Walthamstow High Road and Wapping?

Standards, Boris, standards. You are the mayor, sort ‘em out.

Yours,
The Last Cockney in Camden Town
