Paramedics Brace Themselves For ''Mad Friday”

THE Christmas office party season hits its peak tonight, when expectedly, some people will over indulge in one tequila too many. Emergency services, however, are putting in measures to combat the huge increase in alcohol related injuries at this time of year.

Temporary alcohol related injury units have been installed in various drinking hotspots across the capital. This includes The London Ambulance Service's 'booze buses' – a mobile treatment centre –  which picked up nearly 300 'passengers' in the West End last year. They can take up to five people at a time, and they only deal with alcohol related problems. There will also be a treatment centre at Liverpool Street Station.

Laura Paults for the London Ambulance said, "People fall over, hit their heads, twist their ankles and so on, but mostly they're just very drunk and need looking after.

"If it's minor they'll get taken to our alcohol treatment centre in the West End, to sober up and eventually go home. This takes the pressure of the various Accident and Emergency departments."

A total of 6,681 people in the UK called out ambulances on the equivalent Friday last year, the average being 4,000. London alone saw a 23 per cent increase in alcohol related injuries.
