Red Market

Kate Berry uncovers Shoreditch's – and London's only – night market

Published on August 12th 2011.

Red Market

"Shoreditch’s Red Market is London's first ever night market and will be open throughout the summer on Fridays and Saturdays until the early hours and on Sundays until midnight. The concept is great - invite some local cafes/street food vendors (The Disappearing Dining Club and Big Apple Hot Dogs, amongst others) to set up shop, build a huge bar that serves cheap cocktails, provide beach style seating and throw in some sand, petanque and live street art. For me though, the result didn't quite live up to expectations. There was a real buzz, but it seemed drinking took priority over the market itself and it ended up just feeling like every other bar in Shoreditch. Still, it's something a bit different; the vendors were welcoming and the falafel I tried was really excellent. Hope to see some more stalls thrown in to the mix before the summer is over. Check it out for yourselves – we'd love to hear what you think." – Kate Berry, photographer
