Women On Top: We Are The City & Wardrobe Mistress

IN an interview for Square Mile magazine, Vanessa Vallely, founder of WeAreTheCity.com, states that “things in the city are changing for women.” Vallely created the women’s city networking portal in 2008, which has since accumulated around 6,500 city women users, with a reach of around 70,000 in total.

“Women’s networks not only provide a great support, but they also provide the opportunity for women to expand their networks, as well as the opportunity for them to gain skills and training outside of their work environment."

Not only does this indicate one woman’s ability to defy critics and successfully unite others, but the site also demonstrates just how many women there are reaching for the top and using the internet to do so. Vanessa says that building a network around you is key in terms of success. She believes “it should be seen as an investment, as it takes time and effort and the rewards from having a network to support you should not be underestimated.”

Another outstanding female entrepreneur who follows the same principles is Francesca Salih, the creator of WardrobeMistress.co.uk, an equally innovative site that unites women and exhibits the motivation and passion of a single woman. Wardrobe Mistress defines itself as ‘the new luxury fashion destination offering a total wardrobe management service, led by a team of fashion experts.’

Wardrobe Mistress provides multiple services for fashion followers of any age, with the site primarily functioning as a place to buy and sell designer pieces. The slogan, ‘fashion must go on’ projects the concept that unwanted pieces will circulate around a network of women and will thus be revived. The owner is able to sell what she no longer wears and browse the site for a replacement.

Think of it as fashion recycling with a luxury twist. The best part about the whole concept is that every item on offer is a designer piece and thus becomes a classic investment, as does the opportunity to connect with women across the city.

As a multifaceted business, Wardrobe Mistress provides a range of personal services, which include wardrobe management and detoxing, personal shopping and personal styling. Experts are at hand to provide one on one consultation in the comfort of the client’s home, not via a computer or smart phone, but in the form of face-to-face fashion advice and support. The site is revolutionary in that it provides such a broad scope of fashion orientated services and will even venture into the very wardrobes of its clients.

Wardrobe Mistress is very proud of its detoxing system and are adamant that Francesca "will not leave you until she truly believes you know what you have, what is working and what is not working. The detox is not just about leaving your wardrobe colour coordinated and tidy but a real lesson on how you shop and how you can utilise what you have.”

WeAreTheCity.com has published a series of articles dedicated to inspirational successful businesswomen in London. The women featured are acknowledged for extremely diverse professions, from corporate bankers to writers, chefs, makeup artists, business founders and high-flying MDs. Both of the sites are are based on the best ways to boost your confidence, self-belief and sense of pride. Qualities of which are exactly what has got so many women to the high-achieving position they are in today. To celebrate and share fashion is to celebrate and unite femininity across the multiplicity of professionals that undeniably define London.

There are over 700 Women’s networks in alone in London, niche networks, maternity networks, entrepreneurial networks – there is so much support out there for women at the moment. Vanessa rightfully states, “it really is an exciting time.”
